Learning Support Centre

The Learning Support Centre (LSC) was implemented in September 2003 at Woodroffe High School. The LSC provides academic, emotional and behavioural support to at-risk, exceptional students. The LSC functions as a credit granting resource centre. Junior students are the primary focus, although senior students requiring support can access the LSC. The LSC has a special education teacher and a full time youth worker. The LSC has a smaller number of students in each class. The classroom is across from the main office and beside the student services office. CAT3 and WIAT testing is conducted by the LSC special education teaching staff.

Student support needs, identified in school or through a psychologist, medical doctor, or social worker, are met through the student support team at the high school. The LSC’s staff are key members of the identified student’s support team. The amount of support varies within the LSC and corresponds to student needs. The LSC promotes an effective and efficient team approach to supporting, retaining and increasing the chances of success for students.

The centre is credit generating. The vast majority of students earn a general learning strategies credit (GLE1O). The general learning strategy courses focuses on fundamental academic skills (see attached). Some students take a second GLE course (GLE2O) in a subsequent year. The room allows for continuous student entry either into credit or for support for other courses within the semester. Some students also require support in the LSC in their second semester, second year and beyond during their high school career. Students also have the option of using the LSC to receive support and assistance with their other subjects.

The resource room is open before and after school for students to work and get help. It is also open at lunch for work or as a safe place to come. There are 5 computers for student use within the room. All offer a variety of technology for students to be successful. (E.G. Smart Ideas, etc.)
